Gerrit Roelofs, a member of the Kenyon College English Department until his death in 1985, was one of the original Kenyon faculty members to participate in the Kenyon Academic Partnership. His integrity and high standards in scholarship contributed in no small measure to the success of the program, both in its original days and in its expansion. Gerrit's participation emphasized the two qualities which mark KAP as unique in the country: a truly collegial relationship between high school and college teachers and maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence. Therefore, in November of 1985 the KAP Steering Committee and the Board of Directors established, in his memory, a fellowship grant of $2,000 to be offered annually to a team of teachers or an individual for work on a project which will enhance the teaching of KAP courses in the participating schools. Criteria for selectionAny teacher currently teaching or planning to teach a KAP course in a participating secondary school is eligible. Because of the emphasis on school/college partnership in KAP, the selection process will also give weight to the following priorities concerning the composition of the applicant team: (1) a team of a secondary school teacher and Kenyon College faculty member, (2) a team of two KAP teachers from participating secondary schools, (3) an individual teacher from a participating secondary school. Please note that this fellowship is not available to Kenyon College faculty without the participation of a secondary school teacher. Application processApplications must be submitted by May 1 to the applicant's Steering committee Representative. Three-fourths of the fellowship funds will be awarded to participants on June 1, the remaining one-fourth to be paid upon conclusion of the work on the fellowship and the submission to the KAP Steering Committee of a brief summary of the work done on the project and the results achieved. Applicants for this fellowship must include the following: Data: name(s), school(s) represented, course for which the project is designed. Goals of the project, an estimated budget, methods of procedure, a timetable. The Steering Committee will evaluate the proposals and make the award for the following summer and school year.
