GUIDELINES ON HOW TO START YOUR NEW KAP COURSE

Welcome to the KAP (Kenyon Academic Partnership) program.  The following are some guidelines that will assist you in implementing the KAP program into your high school curriculum.

Once you have met with your Kenyon College professor and you have been approved as a KAP instructor, you will send a resume and a recommendation from your principal to the co-director of the KAP program here at Kenyon.  Once received, this information will be presented to the Provost of the college for his approval.

Each fall you will be sent a KAP contract, detailing what is expected of you as a KAP instructor.  You must sign and return this contract to the Administrative Assistant.
Two very important expectations are 1) Attend the yearly Convocation - the first Saturday in November, 2) Participation in summer workshops, (once your KAP course is established will meet every other summer).

Once you and your KAP course have been approved use the following guidelines:

1.    You will need a yearly syllabus that has been approved by your Kenyon instructor.  You will send yearly an electronic copy of your syllabus to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for posting on the KAP.kenyon.edu website.  This is an important tool for KAP graduates trying to transfer their KAP credit to another institution.

2.    Your potential KAP students will need to fill out an application for each of the KAP courses they wish to take.  Each application will have a high school transcript attached and all parts of the application must be completed, including the teacher’s recommendation portions.  Only juniors and seniors in the top quarter of their class are allowed to apply for KAP courses.  The KAP Administrative Assistant will send you a packet containing the applications in early March.   If you would like your students to receive their letter before the end of the current academic year, applications must be received by April 15th.  Some KAP schools have KAP registration in late summer or very early fall.  This process is not preferred but is acceptable.  The application form is also available on the KAP website.

3.     Once the applications have been reviewed by the Kenyon instructors the appropriate letter will be sent to each student.  One of the following three letters will be sent to the applicant – 1. Acceptance letter, 2. Conditional letter (a motivational letter, giving the student a chance to prove himself and an opportunity in mid-year to drop the course if the students finds he/she is not capable of working at the college level, 3. Rejection letter, explaining at this time why we are unable to approve their acceptance into the KAP program.

4.    Class lists will be sent to the KAP representative of each school, to be distributed to all high school KAP instructors.  The first of three class lists will be sent at the time the letters are sent to the students.  The second list will be sent in early September, using this list again for drop/add and accuracy.  The September list is also for billing purposes. When you sign-off on this list by mid-November, any student remaining on this list will be on the KAP invoice that is sent to the high school by mid -January.  February’s list is the final time a student, normally a conditionally enrolled student, may drop their KAP course.  No tuition will be refunded at that time.

5.    By June 15th high school KAP instructors will enter grades via the web (instructions available on the KAP.kenyon.edu website) or faxed (740 427-5615) to the KAP Administrative Assistant.  All students remaining on the final February class list must receive a grade at the end of the year.

6.    Included in your March application packet will be transcript request forms (also available on the kap.kenyon.edu website). Remind your students to fill out and return back to the Administrative Assistant.  When all grades have been entered, transcript will be processed.

Credit earned by taking a Kenyon/KAP course is based on a unit of credit.  One unit of credit is equal to 8 semester hours or 12 quarter hours.  Most semester courses are for a half unit of credit (4 semester hours or 6 quarter hours).  Some semester courses are taught for a full academic year, still earning the half unit of credit.  All course descriptions and credit information are available on the KAP website (kap.kenyon.edu).  A KAP student is allowed to earn no more the 3 units of Kenyon credit.

If a student applies for courses adding up to more than three Kenyon/KAP units and is accepted, he/she will have the opportunity in early Fall to drop one of the over-enrolled courses.   If at this time the student does not make this choice, the Administrative Assistant of the KAP program will drop the last course added to their schedule.
